how to replace a head gasket on a 96 eclipse GS?
I have a 1996 Eclipse GS that needs a new head gasket. I took it to a shop and they said it would be about $1300! Ha ya right. Anyway I can buy the actual gasket for like $60 and put it on myself. If anyone has done this or knows where to find and good info on how to do this that would be awesome if you could pass it along. O ya I have the 4 cylinder 2.0L front wheel drive 420A engine non turbo. Thanks for your help!!!
The 420a motors all have a bad design head gasket from the factory.
That's Dodge not Mitsubishi. You will need to get the redesigned headgasket from a Mitsubishi dealer. There is also a Mopar spray that you need to spray both sides of the new metal sandwich headgasket with. The instructions for proper 3 stage head bolt torque comes with the gasket. Put a new timing belt, tensioner and pulleys on when putting it back together. I'd also do the water pump if it was my car. The timing belt marks seem simple enough to align, but after doing more than 50 timing belts I know it's harder than you might think. You'll need to jack the motor up as far as it will go, then look at the timing marks that face each other to line up. There is a raised V in the plastic back cover that needs to be in line with both the cam gear marks or you will be a tooth off up or down.
I've never had a warped cylinder head so I wouldn't worry about having the head machined. Just clean it with a gasket scraper and then 80 grit sand paper on a flat sanding block. You can also use a rotary scotch pad on a drill.
If you have lifter noise you may want to replace the bad ones with the motor apart. Still feeling like a mechanic? You're about to find out if you are any good. This is not like a brake job!
