Can a psychologist please tell me why my dad keeps doing this?

My dad keeps taking the electric cords of appliances & gadget and "putting them in a safe place" but end up forgetting where he put them so it's the same as throwing them away.

He took the electric cords of my tire inflator ($90), camcorder ($500), flashlight ($80) and lost them which rendered them useless since they need to be recharged.

I've told him a million times not to do this but he continues to do this and rendering all my stuff useless. He just recently took another cord and lost it.

Why does he keep doing this? I don't think he has Alzehimer's since his memory seems fine and mentally he's pretty sharp for someone in his 60s. It's just this one thing he keeps doing which annoys the hell out of me.

I feel like throwing him out of my house and putting him in a retirement home!

There are medications for dementia, but have your dad checked out first with a Neurologist. They can scan the brain, put him on meds, and monitor him for improvements. Don't hold him entirely responsible.

As far as your missing things, I would do this: I would bring something home, and bring it to his attention that it has a removable electrical cord. Then I would watch him (out of eye, of course), and see where he takes that cord. Then, when he is gone, I would go in and see if there are many others in there. It's possible that he "nests" them for safekeeping, subliminally.

Then, in the future, I would lock up ALL extension cords of any items I have. When something needs to be recharged, I would lock up the entire device until the item is fully ready to use. So long as your dad isn't dangerous to you or himself, as a loving son or daughter, your patience is needed here.

Remember that life comes around full circle, and this may be the beginning of the time when you will have to take care of him, as he did for you when you are a youngster. I'm just on the tip of that with my folks right now. They are both in their 80's, and my other siblings and I are taking turns taking them to doctor's appointments and other miscellaneous things they need help with. We're happy to do it, since they did so for all of us.

Please pray on this. Talk with a professional. Act on it soon, so that your dad can receive the help sooner now than later. There are meds out there that show promise for helping mental changes in the elderly.

Dunlap tires are one of the older tire makers around. They have provided quality tires for several decades now for just about any vehicle that uses tires. Dunlap tires also provide tire owners with tips on how to get the most life out of their tires. These tips really apply to any brand of tire and not just Dunlap.

Top causes of tire wear and tire failure:

Speeding - How many of us are guilty of this?

Curbing - People who get too close to the curb and skin the tread. Eventually this leads to tire failure, which can include a blow out.

Fast turns - Taking corners too quickly is never a good idea.

Improper Tire Inflation - Having too low or too high air pressure in your tires can create tire failure in a short amount of time.

Of all these causes tire inflation is by far the leader in tire care problems. You should inspect your tires every time you fill up for gas. Use a tire inflation gauge at least once a month to be sure your tires are properly inflated.

Weather greatly affects tire pressure. Temperature changes can cause a 5-10 pound change in inflation.

Also, Dunlap advises you to check out tire condition and look for abnormal wear and tear, such as balding or uneven tread wear. This can quickly lead to trouble before you know it.

By simply following some of these tips offered up by Dunlap Tires, you can find yourself avoiding most tire problems and getting the maximum amount of life from your car's tires.

It depends on how far your going. If your planning for an all day trip take everything you listed except the chain. the odds of you chain breaking are slim, but also take like a camelpack, granola bars, and coins for a pay phone just in case. if its a short ride like 2 hours, just take the necessities; coins, cash, cellphone, water.
