Is there any difference between various roof rack brands: Yakima, Thule?
I'm looking to buy a roof rack system for my 2007 Audi S4 sedan.
QUESTION 1:
Is there a difference between the Thule system and the Yakima systems?
I want to use it to carry the following things (in order of importance & frequency of use)
1) One tandem bike (MAY NOT HAVE QUICK RELEASE FRONT WHEEL)
2) Two mountain bikes, each with disc brakes.
3) Two, one-person kayaks
4) One of those roof pod things (an extra trunk of sorts).
QUESTION 2:
Is there any sense in looking for used equipment, or is a roof rack system pretty tailored to a particular make, model and year of car?

Do not buy used as this does have to be an exact fit for your specific make and model year although there are fit kits that apply for many makes and models the other parts can be specific to your model and year. Do not buy used! One brand may work for your car and the other may not, I researched the Thule brand only as it is the one I sell and am familiar with and I also chose 4 locks and you may want more or less (this was the cheap part) as you can see the total price on the page I selected. I would suggest that you start over and price it accordingly on the homepage to find exactly what you need and as a guide for total cost. Do this right and do not buy used unless youdon'tt want to hold that tandem bike...

Trailer Bike or Tandem for Special Needs Daughter?
My daughter is nine years old and can ride a two wheeler bike, however, due to developmental delays, she is very unreliable as far as looking where she is going, staying on paths, and watching for traffic. We want to take up cycling as a family activity but cannot find a trailer bike we feel would suit her. Most of them have an 80lb weight limit which she will exceed very soon. The only ones I can find that have a greater weight limit, have two wheels on the back, tricycle-style which she thinks are too babyish since she can ride a two-wheeler. I've also looked at tandem bikes but alot of them seem to be geared towards two adults and I'm not sure she'd fit. Can anyone recommend a trailer bike or tandem that would suit us?
A tandem would be easier to handle.
I have a trailer bike that works well for small kids, but part of the weight limit is associated with the ability to handle your bike with the trailer attached. If your trailer is too heavy, it will begin to drive you rather than the other way around.
If you shop around, you will find a suitable tandem. Most tandems can be fitted with a kid kit. Soon enough your daughter will fit onto an adult small stoker seat.
FWIW, they also make a tandem where the person in back does the steering. The kid can sit in front so they don't have to stare at your back while riding.
I also just checked the craigslist in my hometown and there are 3 tandems available, one with a child stoker kit installed.
