Sealed Rear What parts and labor is needed to fix a leaky rear axle seal and pinion seal on 03 Mustang GT?
I drive a 2003 Ford Mustang GT with a solid rear axle. I recently noticed gear oil on the inside of my drivers side rear wheel and on the brakes along with a leak at the end of the drive-shaft on the pinion seal.
Is there anything tricky that has to be done to fix this?
You need to pull the rear axle out of the housing, Take the third member housing off, there will be a 1/4 inch bolt holding a shaft in place. take the bolt out as far as you can. The spider gears will fall out. Behind the backing plate for the brakes there is a speed sensor. This needs to be removed so you can push the axle inside the housing far enough to get the c-clip off. The axle will pull out. Get a seal removal tool and remove the old seal. Use a large socket to tap the new seal in place. When you put the spider gears back in, you will need to turn the wheel a bit to get them lined up. Don't worry about putting them in wrong, that shaft will not go back in unless the spider gears are properly positioned.
The pinion shaft seal, drop the drive shaft, there will be a nut holding the u-joint thing on the pinion shaft. Remove this nut, replace the seal and put it back together. Don't forget to bolt the speed sensor back.

How do i remove the rear seals on my jeep?
i have an 06 tj sport and i have the rear axel off but i need to know how to remove the axel seal so i can replace it. it is stock
How much work you need to do depends what axle you have. You will either have the Dana 35 axle which has an oval cover and rubber fill plug, or a Dana 44 axle that has an octagonal cover and metal fill plug. Have a look at the links below which should help explain in more detail with pictures.
