What are some signs that the ignition switch and/or starter is going bad?
2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. The Starter just clicks when I turn the key and sometimes it cranks with no problem. I just replace the Battery today. The Alternator was replaced in the beginning of the year. I also don't know what happens when the ignition switch is going bad.
IT IS ACTUALLY RARE FOR THE SWITCH ITSELF TO GO BAD. It happens, but it sounds as if you did a bunch of replacing BEFORE you had the electrical system TESTED to see exactly which parts DID need to be replaced.
Quick rundown on things - the KEY will not do ANYTHING at all if your SWITCH is bad. If it CRANKS, that means the starter is OK, but if the battery is WEAK, it will not crank the engine over hard enough to start. If ALTERNATOR is bad, it will DRAIN the battery - your lights will be dim and flicker too.
PLEASE take it to a well known mechanic and have them hook your car up to a meter or machine that will instantly tell them exactly what the problem is - and next time, do this BEFORE you shell out hundreds on unnecessary repairs. They have the tools to diagnose problems - most of us cannot afford those machines.
