I didn’t drink at all until I was 22. I blame the drug and alcohol education from my youth, which I think was meant to be counterbalanced with the “peer pressure” they kept warning me about. But my peers were all nerds who failed in their duties, so I internalized the DARE message to my core. Not drinking affected me greatly. It limited my ability to have relationships with people who did drink. I looked down on my friends whom I discovered liked drinking. I couldn’t enjoy myself at parties when there was alcohol present. I tearfully begged my girlfriend to give it up. I was pathetic. Happily, that same girl eventually convinced me I had a problem, and with her help, I was able to, for the first time in my life, sit in a motel room and drink a Seagrams Strawberry Daiquiri wine cooler. In that one drink my life changed forever. Now I probably drink more than I should (and I’m something of a bourbon snob), but overall my relationship with alcohol, and with people who drink, is far healthier than it was when I was a teetotaler. What I learned is that you don’t need to drink to have a problem with alcohol. And if you do have a problem, do what needs to be done to fix it.
