Finding good home windmill plans has never been easier. The escalating costs of all forms of household energy has encouraged more people than at any other time to save money by creating their own electricity. Some of these pioneers have done an excellent job of recording their successes and failures for our benefit.
Before you start looking for just the right set of plans for your own windmill consider the overall picture of how wind generated electricity actually works.
How Is Electricity Generated From The Wind?
1. A tail fin orients the windmill blades to face the wind.
2. The wind pushes up against the windmill propeller-type blades. These blades are designed to catch the wind in such a way that a positive pressure is created on one side of each blade and a negative on the other, much like an airplane wing. This coordinated pressure causes the blades to move or spin in a circle.
3. The spinning blades are usually attached to an axel that is connected to a permanent magnet style of DC (direct current) electric motor. The connection with the axel is set up to spin the DC Motor in the opposite direction that it normally moves when electrically powered and performing work.
This reverse motor rotation takes advantage of the fact that any conductor, in this case wound coils of wire found in the motor, moving past a permanent magnet creates an electric current. This current exits the same wires that were formerly designed to receive electricity to power the motor. The electricity generated moves along these wires in only one direction and is called DC or Direct Current.
What Happens To This Newly Generated Electricity If You Don't Use It Right Away?
The short answer is that it is wasted. Gone forever. It is only briefly stored in the wire until it quickly reaches its capacity. The excess electricity usually dissipates into the air as heat or directly into the ground if wired that way.
Batteries To The Rescue.
Deep cycle batteries similar to those found in electric golf carts or forklift vehicles are often used to store this wind generated power for later use. The number of batteries needed and how they are wired is dependent on several factors; how much power the windmill generator produces and how much you will need to run part or all of your house.
The exact formulas for setting up the battery bank is not complicated but the details can be better explained in complete windmill plan books.
Is The Direct Current Stored In The Batteries Capable Of Running Typical House Hold Appliances?
Not until the direct current coming from the batteries is passed through an inverter. This is an electrical device that changes the electricity to 110 volts of alternating current that most household appliances require.
This covers, in a somewhat oversimplified manner, the basics of how wind generated electricity works. There are, however, a few other simple and inexpensive devices that are typically part of a windmill system:
1. Strategically placed cut off switches along the power route for safely maintaining the system. 2. A Charge controller that increases the life of the batteries by preventing overcharging. 3. A system meter that measures how full the battery bank is at any given time.
When looking for home windmill plans make sure that you buy from an author that has actually built one for their own use. They will have made many mistakes from which you can benefit. This will greatly increase the efficiency of the final product while reducing your frustration in the process of building your own windmill generator.
