Engine Cowling
Engine Cowling

Why are some radial engines exposed and some are hidden away under a cowling?
I really like the look of an exposed radial engine on a airplane. But I suspect there are good reasons to hide one under a cowling.
Radial engines are air cooled. Most all radial engines ran more efficiently when they are warm. The cowling has flaps ( little doors) on the back side - when the aircraft is up high they close limiting the amount of air flow over the cylinder heads thus making the engine run a little warmer and more efficiently. The air craft that just had the cylinder sticking outinto the air were rather low altitude air craft. The cowling (or nacelle) also improves aerodynamics(less drag) around the engine.
