Do I need custom fitted golf clubs ?
I have found a set of clubs I like, but my local store has said that since I am quite tall (6'2") I should have them custom fitted - which doesn't cost extra but a) will take three weeks to have done and b) I can buy the same set online for £100 cheaper. So is a custom-fitting worth doing ? Will it make a big difference ? I am a high handicap,occasional player, though hoping to play more
Yes ,custom fitting is a great idea. It will put you in a position to make the best possible swing you can. Some people hit too many thin shots because they're too tall for their clubs. Some hit too many fat shots because they're too short for their clubs. If the lie angles are off, you run the risk of losing too many shots to the left or right, depending on if the lie angles are too upright or flat. If you're shaft flex is too weak, you'll get inconsistent distance. If it's too stron, you won't get enough distance.
You could get custom fit and still buy the set online. You can then have your clubs retro-fitted. You may end up only needing your lie angles adjusted, but you might need the whole kit-n-kaboodle. If your shaft flex needs differ from the one offered online, you'd need to buy new shafts... that can get expensive and defeat the purpose of the 100 pound savings.
In your case and seeing how you're 6'2", I'd say you're better off getting fit and buying from the shop- you'll get exactly what you want/need. You'll have to wait a bit, but honestly, three weeks won't kill you.
